ATO Background Check - Document Checklist
What documents do I need?
Section A
One of the following;
- Full Australian birth certificate (birth extracts cannot be accepted)
- Australian citizenship certificate (providing both the front AND the back of the certificate)
Section B
One of the following;
- Current Australian passport
- Current photo ID, a state or territory, e.g. an Australian drivers license
- Current Australia Post KeyPass Identity card
- Current Proof of Age card
Section C
One of the following;
- Current Medicare card
- Centrelink Pensioner Concession card or Health care card
- Private health care card
- Current credit card or bank card
- Bank account statement dated within the last 6 months
- Current Security Guard/Crowd Control license
- Tertiary identification card
Section D
If your current residential address does not appear on any of the documents provided in Section B or Section C then you must also provide one of the following;
- Property lease/rental agreement
- Electoral roll registration
- An account from a utility such as electricity, phone, gas, insurance, motor vehicle registration or land rates notice dated within the last 6 months
Section E
Evidence of official/legal name changes using one of the following;
- Australian marriage certificate
- Overseas marriage certificate issued by an official authority
- Decree nisi/decree absolute
- Deed poll
- A re-issued birth certificate with name change documented
- An official name change document issued by the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages
Section F
All external workers born in Australia on or after 20 August 1986 must provide one of the following (if not already supplied)
- Current Australian passport OR
- Evidence of one parent’s Australian citizenship or permanent residency at the time of your birth.
This evidence can be any one of the following:
- one parent’s Australian birth certificate
- one parent’s Australian passport that was issued prior to your birth
- one parent’s certificate of Australian citizenship or permanent residency valid at the time of your birth
- proof of one parent’s permanent residency at the time of your birth If you are unable to provide any of the above you must apply to the Department Immigration and Citizenship for a Certificate of evidence of Australian citizenship.
